Today I was at work going through normal day to day activities while listening to music on Slacker.com. Through my headphones I heard a song telling an interesting and sad story that sounded very personal to the artist. Throughout the song I noticed the artist kept mentioning a particular name. The song touched me but I felt I couldn’t completely understand how and why it touched me without knowing who the song was referring. I then began my search for the person behind the name “Assata.” It was an extremely short search but the beginning of a great learning and life experience. Thanks to Common’s Song for Assata I began learning about Assata Shakur and many other black activist and political prisoners. After reading through Assata’s Wikipedia page I was appalled that I had never heard of her or many others like her. I immediately ordered the book Still Black, Still Strong: Survivors of the U.S. War Against Black Revolutionaries which Assata is a co-author, to begin my search into this important and restricted area of history. I am determined to learn the history that has been withheld… The Hidden Black.
